LOCAL BUSINESS RAYTEC IN RUNNING FOR TOP AWARD

One of the Europe’s most successful new technology companies - Raytec Ltd - have been short listed as one of four finalists in The Orange Best Use of Technology Award.

The company, based in Ashington, is a specialist manufacturer of LED lighting, and received financial backing from Wansbeck Council’s ‘Go Wansbeck’ Local Enterprise Growth Initiative (LEGI) which has proved essential in assisting the business to grow and get it to the successful stage it is at today.

Raytec began life at the Wansbeck Enterprise Centre, the new business incubation centre in Ashington.  The Centre played a significant role in Raytec’s development and growth by providing start-up business mentoring support as well as providing offices and workshops for them.

The Centre is very proud of its ‘graduate’ business and is confident that it will become a major international Wansbeck-based company, and in a very short period of time, Raytec has gone from being a small, local new business to firmly establishing itself in the world market, initially starting out with just two members of staff growing to 19 in under four years.

Raytec operate in two markets - electronic surveillance (CCTV) and ITS (Intelligent Transport Systems). They provide a complete range of world leading Infra-Red and White-Light illuminators, which offer industry-leading equipment at competitively low prices.

Sean Cutler, Raytec’s managing director, said: “Since we set up Raytec in 2005, the company has gone from strength to strength, and we are proud to be part of something which is bringing a sense of pride and renewal to the Wansbeck district.

“Go Wansbeck were a real help – we saw a niche in the market and through their business start-up programme they gave us the support we needed at a crucial time.”

The award will go to the organisation that can best demonstrate that it has effectively used business technology to create a successful and competitive business, addressing not only the deployment of the technology, but also its effective uptake by employees and stakeholders.
