ENTERPRISING KIDS GO GLOBAL WITH INTERNATIONAL MARKET

School children in Wansbeck are going global and preparing to show off their talents in celebration of national enterprise week (17-23 November).

Pupils at nearly half the schools in the district are brushing up on their cookery and craft skills in time for two spectacular international markets where shoppers will be able to buy a range of handmade festive treats including American cookies, African jewellery and Northumberland Jam.

Bedlington market place will host the first market on Friday 21 November between 12.30 and 2.30pm while people in Ashington can look out for the stalls on Station Road between 10.30am and 12.30pm on Saturday 22 November.

The project is being organised by Wansbeck Education Enterprise Network (WEEN)

and is the latest in an ongoing series of events and activities aimed at equipping youngsters of all ages with the tools that they need in order to become confident adults.

Lindsey Dunn of WEEN, said: “This is an exciting project that will give local students the opportunity to showcase their enterprising skills to their local area as well as developing a range of business skills. The event has given pupils the opportunity to plan and handle budgets, conduct market research and develop marketing strategies, giving them valuable exposure to the mechanics of the working world.

“By embedding enterprise at a grass roots level in all our schools, we are confident that it will become an integral part of young people’s lives in Wansbeck.”

Supported by funding from Go Wansbeck – Wansbeck’s government–funded Local Enterprise Growth Initiative (LEGI) programme – WEEN is working closely with a number of partners in the public, private, voluntary and community sector.

Keith Raine, Go Wansbeck programme manager, said: “The enthusiasm and energy of the WEEN team is really inspiring young people in Wansbeck and makes a significant contribution to making the district the most enterprising area in the region.

“We want them to grow up with the knowledge that in an enterprise culture anything is possible and that being an entrepreneur is a viable, realistic option for their future.”
